Pre-employment Health Assessments
The main purpose of the pre-employment health assessment (PEHA) is to ensure that an individual
has no pre-existing ill health or disabilities which may affect their ability to perform the
proposed job. The assessment provides baseline data and consideration of the
Disability
Discrimination Act 1995 (DDA).
To assess a potential employee’s fitness for work, COPE commonly uses one of three levels
of pre-employment health assessment depending on the identified job tasks. These are: Paper
screening only; Telephone consultation/face to face meeting or Full base line health assessment.
Pre-placement health assessments
When considering transferring an existing employee to another job within your organisation
it may be appropriate to review the pre-employment health assessment against their current
health status eg. transferring to duties such as fork lift truck driving or working at height.
Pre-exit/leavers health assessments
An exit medical is just as important, especially with the dramatic growth in compensation
claims against past employers. You will be provided with objectively obtained data at the time
of the employee’s exit to minimise risk and mitigate legislative action in forthcoming years.
For example, HAVS (hand arm vibration) assessment.
The escalation of compensation claims against past employers means an exit medical is just as
important as a pre-employment one. An exit medical provides you with data that has been objectively
obtained to minimise the risk of claims in later years, eg. HAVS assessment (hand arm vibration).
